My Fitness Journey... So Far
I would like to preface this by saying that I am no fitness expert nor do I claim to be. I have been working out regularly for only a few months, so in no way do I know as much as others, I just simply want to share my story with those who are interested.
So, let's begin...
Over the past couple of years, I attempted to start going to the gym several times. I would go, if you may call it "steadily" for a few days then I would find an excuse not to go for one day and never go back for months on end. My excuses consisted of "I am too sore" or "I am too exhausted" and though to this present day, these are some reasons why I don't train for one day, there's a vast difference in my mentality then vs. now.
One day, in January of 2020, I messaged an old friend who has become an amazing and inspiring bodybuilder and powerlifter. I asked him how I could get serious, and how to get the motivation to go to the gym. He said that after his first week going religiously, it just became something he became in love with and addicted to. THIS piece of advice is something that I standby and I can say that this got me to my current position. It is true. Though this advice is powerful and can resonate, there are so many more factors that come into play when trying to get motivated to start working out. Now, I will share with you some aspects that helped me get a move along my fitness journey.
First, I found that following inspiring fitness Instagrammers gave me a lot of inspiration. Throughout most of these Instagram pages, there are epic transformation photos, inspiring stories, and what I enjoy most, workout posts. Another benefit of following these influencers is that most of them offer fitness plans for sale. After following these pages and getting fitness into your Instagram algorithm, it is much easier to see that this fitness community is huge- and there is always a lot left to learn.
A few of my favorite Instagram pages are @alenefit, @mrs.sweendogg, and @krissycela.
I know that seeing Instagram fitness pages is not always going to be a realistic goal for everyone because we all know that we can't always trust what we see on the internet, which leads me to my next tip; Find people that you know who are into fitness. As I mentioned at the beginning, I connected with a friend of mine who recently got into bodybuilding. Besides him, I also connected with another friend who shared a lot of aspirations with me besides fitness, so working out together and even following along their journey inspired me as well. When you see people near you working hard, it will light that needed fire under your butt... At least, it did for me.
One of the biggest struggles in my many attempts at going to the gym was that others would push me to do so. My mom, brother, boyfriend, and many more were always on my case to take care of myself and work out. Me, being stubborn, wanted to outright ignore this and that is what I did. I will admit, that I did need their push to get the thought in my head, but at the end of the day, it takes one's individual will and desire to achieve their goals.
I am going to close off with a tip that we all need to know, not only regarding fitness but for life in general. Part of my failure when I first attempted going to the gym, was not seeing the results I expected. That being said, seeing results takes time and it's different for every person. Most importantly, you will get what you put into it. Be patient, and continue to work hard not only for the physical aspect but for the mental and emotional impacts.
I'm not going to lie, there will be plenty of days where that rock in your shoe is too painful and distracting to participate in
your daily training... But hear me when I say it's not the end of the world. If you have the commitment and desire, starting this fitness journey is just one step closer to showing that annoying, stubborn rock who's boss. It is one step closer to taking that rock out of your shoe for good.
